French Toast

20 mins 4 servings Easy

Classic French toast with a golden, crispy exterior and a soft, custardy center. Perfect for a special breakfast or brunch!

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices of bread (brioche, challah, or French bread work best)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup, plus more for serving
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh berries, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish (like a pie plate), whisk together eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, maple syrup, and salt.
  2. Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt.
  3. Working one at a time, dip bread slices into egg mixture, allowing each side to soak for 10-15 seconds.
  4. Transfer soaked bread to the hot skillet and cook until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Add remaining butter to the skillet as needed between batches.
  6. Serve warm with maple syrup and any other desired toppings.

Recipe Notes

Tip: For best results, use slightly stale bread as it absorbs the custard better without falling apart.

Make Ahead: You can prepare the custard mixture the night before and soak the bread in the morning.
